Course aim

To encourage students to reflect on the link between theory and practice in drama, to experience the interaction of theory and practice in the best performance synthesis and to extend insight into the dynamics and dialectic of contemporary theory and practice.

Course content

A theory/practice study of the theory of aesthetics of performance; the relationship between literary and performance text; how theatre might fit into a general theory of the media; the relationship between mainstream and alternative theatre productions; intercultural theatre; the theatre of a particular culture as a specific system for the generation of meaning; the relationship between the semiotic and non-semiotic function of theatre experience.
