Course aim

To familiarise students with current thinking about patterns of development in children aged birth to 3 years.

Course content

Students will develop an understanding of the theories, themes and principles of child development and concepts of nurture. The students will explore general principles of communication, physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development conception to three years and how to foster these. Students will be introduced to early brain growth and function, parents and family, their influences on children’s development and partnerships with parents. Descriptive observation techniques, principles and processes of planning for care, curriculum development and quality standards will be studied. Students will be introduced to reflective practice in examining personal values and belief.
