Course aim

To provide students with an awareness of the range of children with special needs/disabilities likely to be encountered in various educational settings and an understanding of the nature of specific disabilities and their implications for care, curriculum design and instructional and environmental modification.

Course content

Overview of exceptionality/disability; identification; inclusion; early intervention; Negotiated Education Plan; physical/sensory impairment; health issues; intellectual impairment; communication and language disorders; gifted and talented; emotional/behavioural disorders; learning disabilities; instructional modifications; support services; parent education and support; current issues in special education.
