For the individual student to examine a public policy, policy instrument, problem and reform in specific policy areas, as a basis for personal and organisational learning.
An in-depth examination of public policy in one or two policy areas. A list of broad policy areas of importance to South Australia might include: Education, Energy, Health, Housing, Arts, Environment, Industrial Relations, Small Business, Welfare, Employment, Primary Industry, Science and Technology, Urban Transport, Urban Planning, Tourism and Recreation, Manufacturing and Tertiary Industry, Resources and Resource Development.
The topic chosen should have a basis in theoretical literature. Theoretical literature is usually based on empirical study and data analysis and it is expected that there will be a substantive theoretical and empirical component to the project.
The student will be required to prepare an outline of the proposed methodology within the first two weeks of the course (latest date) and submit to the Course Coordinator for discussion and possible refinement.
The specific management implication of the policy issue under study will be an important aspect of the research.
As well, the effective management of a project will be covered: Project specification, project sponsorship and negotiation, managing team data collection and analysis, drafting documentation on project outcome as a team output, presentation to sponsors, key stakeholders and decision makers.
