To provide students with an introduction to the First Testament and the Second Testament as literature and as sacred texts.
Introduction to the literary genres of the First Testament, Genesis and the Pentateuchal theory; teaching myth and legend, dealing with images of women in the First Testament, the Book of Exodus and the question of history, the Prophets: Hosea and Amos; the Book of Daniel and the nature of apocalyptic; first-century Judaism and Jesus’ Jewish context, the nature of the earliest Christian communities, the literary genres of the Second Testament, dealing with images of women in the Second Testament, the historical development of the gospels, historical-critical and narrative-critical approaches to the Gospel of Mark or the Gospel of Matthew, teaching the gospels in Religious Education programs.
