To enhance students' knowledge of the increasing relations between Australia and Asia since pre-colonial times, to develop a critical understanding of the major and current events and themes in Australia's involvement with Asia and to understand the growth of Asian economies in particular China, India and Japan and its implications for Australia in the global context.
Students will build on existing skills to develop a critical understanding of Australia-Asian relations, starting with Asian/Macassan contact with Aboriginal Australia, in the past centuries leading to the current times. Students will further explore the impact of US and Japan alliance, Australian involvement in Asian military/security conflict, and contemporary developments in Asian-Australian relations, including Asians in Australia, and Australia’s incorporation into Asian regionalism and the emerging Asian century.
