Introduction to Communication and Cultural Studies

Course aim

The course contextualises the historical development of communication and cultural studies theory and practice and introduces major theoretical perspectives and dominant thinkers in the areas of communication and cultural studies.

Course content

Students will develop knowledge of historical development, major theorists and theoretical movements in Communication Studies and Cultural Studies. They will become familiar with the media and consumer culture, texts, language and semiotics, poststructuralism and postmodernism. Students will also be introduced to ideology and power, identity politics, race, gender, sexualities and class, postcolonialism, regulatory society, technologies of surveillance, psychoanalytical theory and body/pleasure.
