To introduce students to foundation knowledge about the political context and development of the human services, their relationship to dominant values and the nature of professional intervention.
Indigenous history; European invasion and responses to indigenous people; Nature of the human services, social work, welfare and community services; government and non-government service provision; historical themes in policy; comparative approaches to human service provision; changing policy patterns; human rights and social justice in contemporary society; current social issues; values and ethical foundations of the human services professions.
