To develop an understanding of current communications theories and their strategic relevance in developing higher level skills in research, writing and public speaking for academic and professional contexts and audiences.
Communications models and contexts; ideologies, values and assumptions; barriers to effective communication; interpersonal, organisational and public communications; cross cultural and intercultural communications; verbal, non-verbal and semiotic codes; news construction and bias; audience analysis; planning and presenting information in oral and written modes, developing research capacities; building a logical argument; referencing using the Harvard system.
