Course aim

The aim of this course is to examine soil classification and investigation procedures, behaviour of the three main types of problem soils, ground improvement techniques, bearing capacities and settlements of footings, slope stability, retaining structures, residential footings on reactive clay soils.

Course content

Basic soil mechanics; expansive soils; collapsing and compressible soils; ground improvement- compaction and other methods; shear strength and bearing capacity; slope stability for soil and rock; earth stresses and retwining structure systems; footing settlement; design of footings on expansive clay soils.
