How do I become a secondary Humanities and Social Sciences teacher?

Humanities and Social Sciences teachers support students to develop their historical, geographical, social and economical understanding of societies to produce knowledgeable, critical and engaged citizens.

Please note: SATAC codes apply to domestic applications only.

What do I need to study?

To become a secondary Humanities, History or Social Sciences teacher, you will need to study one of the following options below.

OPTION 1

Four-year undergraduate Honours degree.

Take a direct path into secondary teaching with a four-year undergraduate Honours degree. Complete a major and sub-major in the Learnings Areas of your choice, both teachable from years 7 – 12.

Bachelor of Secondary Education (Honours) (Whyalla)

AND Choose
> History and Geography
as either your major or sub-major Learning Area

OPTION 2

Packaged Bachelor and Master program.

Consider a packaged program to guarantee your place into the Master of Teaching (Secondary)^ directly after your bachelor’s degree. Apply directly to SATAC using the unique code listed.

OPTION 3

Bachelor's degree with separate Master option.

Enjoy the flexibility of completing a bachelor's degree with the option to continue with postgraduate studies in teaching and graduate in only five years.

On successful completion of your undergraduate degree, you will need to apply via SATAC and enrol in the following postgraduate program in teaching with UniSA:

Master of Teaching (Secondary) – Humanities and Social Sciences

OPTION 4

Master of Teaching (Secondary) 

If you’ve already completed a Bachelor degree* you may be eligible to study the two-year Master of Teaching (Secondary)

Notes

*Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Arts (History and Global Politics), or Bachelor of Arts (Cultural Studies) need to complete courses in both History and Geography, as well as civics, citizenship, business and politics.
