This degree will develop your knowledge of the global business environment and enable you to maximise your career development opportunities and employment prospects. You will benefit from a range of experience-based learning opportunities, including overseas study trips and business mentorships with a senior business leader through the Executive Partners Program.

Your studies will focus on international business strategy, international trade, global marketing, and the impact and sustainability of tourism – the knowledge you will need to accelerate your career as a business professional in an international context.

What you'll learn

Postgraduate Business students

This two year program comprises 16 courses including 4 electives and an industry placement/project.  You will start with seven core courses common to all specialisations in the IMBA. Through these you will develop advanced skills and expertise in areas of international management including:

  • Global Business Environment
  • People Leadership and Performance
  • Economic Principles for Business
  • Fundamentals of Data Analytics for Business.

You will then move into your tourism and event management specialisation studying areas such as the business of tourism, destination management, event management and digital innovations.

Study hours

For each course you study, you will need to allocate time for various classes such as lectures, tutorials, workshops, seminars and practicals. Plus you will need additional hours to study in your own time to complete assignments, readings and projects, as well as to contribute to online discussion forums. So as a general rule, if you are studying full-time you would need to allocate 12–26 hours of study when at university and 14–28 hours of independent study per week.

An International Master of Business Administration (Tourism and Event Management) will equip you to pursue an international events, tourism or hospitality career worldwide.  Your advanced project management skills will provide you with career opportunities at a senior level, and enable you to excel in roles such as:

  • Attractions coordinator: conducting daily safety audits; enhancing guest experiences; providing leadership and direction to members in operations; promoting teamwork, and assisting teams in meeting quality and quantity standards.
  • Business development manager: working to improve an organisation’s market position and financial growth; defining strategic goals, building customer relationships, identifying business opportunities, implementing marketing initiatives.
  • Destination marketing manager: leading the development, implementation, and evaluation of marketing campaigns to drive bookings of experiences and events; managing paid and organic digital marketing channels; collaborating with designers to produce creative materials; effectively managing all CRM campaigns to promote packages to new and existing tourism partners.
  • Event manager or coordinator: using strong organisational and project management skills to deliver successful, cost-effective events; managing staff and suppliers; booking venues, facilities and equipment; marketing and promotion; analysis and reporting on event performance.
  • Event sponsorship manager: coordinating sponsorship solicitation and fundraising efforts; meeting stakeholder needs; managing renewals and negotiations; overseeing communication with sponsors, aligning business and market needs; overseeing sponsorship strategies.
  • Events and exhibitions coordinator: project managing and coordinating collection changeovers and exhibitions at arts organisations; managing contractors and budgets; collaborating with designers and liaising with artists.
  • Festival organiser: logistical planning, organisation and execution of events; using creative ideas to promote festivals; ensuring budgetary considerations are fulfilled.
  • Professional conference coordinator: liaising with contractors and suppliers; organising equipment and programmes; assisting on-site throughout the event; using strong organisational and managerial skills to ensure smooth execution conferences.
  • Tourism and hospitality business owner: overall management of strategy and operations relating to event planning, sales and marketing, lodging, and customer service; planning annual budgets and monitoring return on investment.
  • Tourism development manager: conceptualising and implementing strategic plans to help drive tourism; engaging with community stakeholders to align development goals.
  • Tourism experience planner: representing a particular community or destination develop enriching, meaningful experiences for visitors.

The Business Student Hub is a dedicated and convenient support service for business students, from first year right through to graduation. The team provides expert advice on study options, elective choices and any academic difficulties, and can help with referrals to support services across the University. The Business Student Hub is there to facilitate your life at university, so you get the most out of your UniSA experience.

Your program director

I am a Senior Lecturer (Strategy and Entrepreneurship) and the Program Director for a number of postgrad business courses. I am also the co-Director for Centre for Enterprise Dynamics in Global Economies (C-EDGE), a research centre within UniSA. In the past I had the opportunity to work and provide consultancy to industry and the government in Australia and India. I’ve also conducted extensive, high-quality research in the field of innovation policy, entrepreneurship, strategy, and international business. As Program Director for this degree, I believe students will benefit from both industry informed coursework and practical opportunities such as business mentorships, to help advance their future career goals.
