Admission criteria

The admission criteria have been grouped to assist you to easily find the information most relevant to your circumstances. However, you may fit into more than one and the university will consider applicants against each of the relevant criteria.

To be eligible for selection, applicants are required to have:

Completed the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE); and
- completed 200 credits of subjects;
- achieved a grade of C* or better in the Personal Learning Plan, 20 credits of literacy, 10 credits of numeracy and the Research Project at Stage 2;
- achieved a grade C- or better in an additional 60 credits at Stage 2;
- obtained a competitive ATAR.
* For Stage 2 subjects a grade of C- or better is required

Alternatively, the minimum educational requirements may be met by those who have one of the following qualifications:
- Completed the equivalent secondary education qualifications as required for University entry under SACE and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
- Completed the International Baccalaureate Diploma, obtaining a minimum score of 24 points and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
- Completed or partly completed a recognised higher education program at a recognised higher education institution and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
- Completed at least four Open Universities Australia (OUA) courses at the appropriate level and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
- Completed an award from TAFE or from another registered training organisation at AQF Certificate IV or above and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
- Qualified for Special Entry and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
- Completed the University Foundation Studies program with a grade of Credit or better in the course Foundation Mathematics 2 Calculus.

Aim

This program aims to produce graduates who are skilled in any one of three important areas of modern Mathematical Science, namely Applied Mathematics, Statistics or Optimisation. These graduates will be well equipped for work in Business or Industry or to continue with postgraduate studies.

Content & Structure

This three year program provides a comprehensive grounding in modern Applied Mathematics, Statistics and Optimisation theory and practice. Students receive a solid foundation in each of the three areas of Applied Mathematics, Statistics and Optimisation in the first two years of the program, with the opportunity to further specialise within their chosen Elective Stream in the final year. Students may have the opportunity to work with Business or Industry on a major Clinic Project and will be selected on academic merit.

One hundred and eight (108) units of study are required to complete the program.

The ATAR cut off for this program is subject to significant fluctuation e.g. in 2009 the ATAR cut off was 85.7, whereas in 2010 the cut off was 97.3. The cut off is provided for information only and is not to be considered as the minimum ATAR required for entry in the program in future years. Prospective students interested in studying this program are encouraged to include this program in their SATAC preferences irrespective of their actual or expected ATAR.

Rules & notes

Notes

1. Students are provided with the opportunity to specialise in a related science discipline of either: Computer Science; Biology; Chemistry or Physics by selecting one of the science-based Directed Electives from the list in the schedule above. Should a student wish to continue their science-discipline studies in Study Period 5, they are encouraged to do so by enrolling in subsequent courses: Programming Fundamentals; Chemistry 101; Applied Physics 2 or Biological Science 101 as their university-wide elective.

2. Students may select a freely chosen Elective course from any other School or Division. It is recommended that students do not select electives in the discipline of Mathematics. A list of elective courses is available from the UniSA website via http://www.unisanet.unisa.edu.au/programs. The selection will be subject to availability and satisfaction of pre-requisite requirements.

3. The availability of Mathematics Clinic 1 is dependent upon student eligibility and minimum enrolment requirements. Should Mathematics Clinic 1 not be offered, students in the Applied Mathematics and Optimisation streams will be advised to enrol in Variational Calculus. Students in the Statistics stream will be advised to enrol in Design and Analysis of Experiments.

4. Advanced Mathematics Clinic is a continuation of the group project commenced in Mathematics Clinic 1. When Clinic is not available, students will be required to enrol in Mathematics Project 2 (MATH 3013) in lieu of Advanced Mathematics Clinic in Study Period 5.
