Course aim

'Materials and Processes' inducts students in the safe and effective use of tools and workshop equipment to cut, join, bend, carve, and form materials such as wood, metal, plaster, and plastic, and explore the creative application of digital and analogue processes for the production of artworks and design artefacts. In addition to providing practical and technical instruction, the course also considers the conceptual aspects of materials and processes, their changing cultural meanings, and the ethical and environmental issues associated with their life cycles from production to waste.

Course content

Project planning and concept design; Induction in WHS and Safe Operating Procedures (SOPs) of tools and workshop equipment including hand and power tools, band saw, mitre saw, drill press, lathe, sheet metal bender, vacuum former, laser cutter, and 3D Printer; Cutting, joining, bending/folding, carving and forming materials including paper, wood, metal, plaster, and plastic; Introduction to digital processes and digital/analogue combinations; Casting and molding techniques; Introduction to the cultural history, and ethical and environmental consequences of materials and processes and their use in industry, contemporary art and design; Practice-based research, journaling and project documentation.
