Course aim

Students will develop awareness and understanding of fundamental aspects of Atomic, Nuclear and Radiation science in relation to society, medicine, defence, scientific research and space.

Course content

The atom and sub-atomic particles, electromagnetic radiation, atomic spectra, an introduction to quantum mechanics, imaging and analytical techniques in science which are underpinned by atomic or quantum behaviours.

Radioactivity and ionising radiation, natural and stimulated nuclear reactions, interaction of radiation with matter, x-ray generation, x-ray characteristics, radiation detection and quantification, radiation safety, impacts of radiation on the environment, applications of radiation in the medical, defence, space, agricultural and food and other industries, ethics related to atomic, nuclear, and radiation issues, as well as public awareness.
