Course aim

To introduce students to sociological concepts and theories as well as develop essay writing skills utilised in the social sciences.

Course content

This course provides an overview of the discipline of sociology in an Australian context. The course examines the nature of inequality along the lines of class, gender and sexuality, race and ethnicity as well as social institutions such as the family and marriage, education and healthcare in Australia. Central to the course is the analysis of the relationship between an individual and the society in contemporary Australia. The course prepares the students for writing in the social sciences and humanities areas.
