Decision-Making for Midwifery and Nursing Practice

Course aim

The aim of this course is to extend knowledge and skills relating to clinical reasoning and decision-making by exploring clinical reasoning and decision-making theories models/frameworks, the regulatory frameworks within which they operate and the professional accountability of applying it. This course will consider the clinical,
cultural, and professional factors that influence clinical decision-making from the perspective of the Registered Midwife and Registered Nurse. Recognition of and respect for women’s/patient's cultural identity and lifestyle choices will be analysed.

Course content

Decision-making theories, models, and frameworks. Legal and ethical practices including autonomy, moral agency, power, accountability, taking into consideration cultural, professional, and personal beliefs. The partnership model and women’s identity/person centered care and lifestyle choices including Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander and those with ethnic and other diverse needs.
