Course aim

To present algorithms for the generation, display and manipulation of graphical images from two and three dimensional object models.    

Course content

2D Graphics: 2D geometry, transformations. Windows and viewports. Graphics output primitives. Basic 2D algorithms. Clipping.

3D Graphics: 3D Geometry, transformations. Perspective and parallel projections. Viewing transformations. Clipping.

Representation of surfaces and construction of scenes: Polygon mesh, triangulated irregular networks, and spline representations of surfaces. Data structures and algorithms to generate and display surfaces. Fractal and other modelling methods. Scene representations and associated data structures.

Generation of realistic images: Hidden line and hidden surface problems: classification of algorithms; Back-face removal, depth-buffer, scan line, depth-sort, area subdivision, octree algorithms; comparison of algorithms. Colour models and surface shading. Texture, surface patterns, shadows and transparency. Ray tracing.

Manipulation of images: Image storage formats. Some basic image manipulation algorithms.

Game Engines: Game Engines will be used as an across course application of computer graphics techniques and algorithms.
