Urban Regeneration

Course aim

Urban regeneration is a complex process that seeks to reinvigorate disinvested areas within cities. Facilitated by entrepreneurial relationships between various tiers of government, private sector actors and, to debatable degrees, local communities urban regeneration is simultaneously a significant physical, political, social, environmental and economic undertaking that occurs and operates at multiple policy and geographic scales. The aim of this course is to provide students with an advanced understanding of the [1] factors that lead to urban decline, the [2] policy frameworks and agendas designed to regenerate these areas and [3] the opportunities and conflicts that may arise through the enactment of such policies.

Course content

In Weeks 1-6 the course will address the processes of urban decline, examine policy-led responses to address this decline drawing upon both the domestic and international literature. Through case study analysis students will gain an appreciation of the complexity of such undertakings. In Weeks 7-12 the course will adopt a more professionally-oriented and practice-based approach. This will involve fieldwork in one or more sites having undergone or currently undergoing regeneration within South Australia. Collaboration with key stakeholder organisations, such as local and state government, private sector organisations and community-based groups and organisations will provide students with an immersive, real-world understanding of urban regeneration.
