Language Ideology and Policy

Course aim

To build on students' skills acquired in previous courses and apply knowledge of applied linguistics and sociolinguistics theory and analytic methods to investigate critically the relationships among language ideology, policy and planning at an advanced level.

Course content

In this course, students will use their knowledge of applied and sociolinguistics to examine how language draws on, exerts, and reinforces social power. Students will explore the ideological underpinnings of the concept of national and minority languages and the ways that decisions about languages in public life and education can marginalise language groups. They will consider how ideologies about language construct relationships between dominant and non-dominant groups, and how language is consequential in the relationships of power among groups, particularly in the current context of global displacement and mobility of people.

Completion of any two second year courses from the Applied Linguistics or English Language Major / Sub-major within the Bachelor of Arts (MBAA), or English Language Major within the Bachelor Creative Industries (DBCI), or by approval from the Program Director.
