Course aim

To build on students' skills acquired in previous course and apply knowledge of linguistic theory and analytic methods to investigate critically the relationships between power and language at an advanced level

Course content

In this course, students will use their knowledge of linguistic theory and methods to examine how language draws on, exerts, and reinforces social power. Students will explore the ideological underpinnings of the concept of national languages and the ways that decisions about languages in public life and education can marginalise language groups. They will consider how ideologies about language construct relationships between dominant and non-dominant groups and how language is consequential in the relationships of power among groups.
