Course aim

To develop in-depth understanding the dynamic behaviour of earthquakes and the structural response. To develop and extend student’s analysis and design skills in masonry structures these to include dynamic analysis and design of structures subjected to earthquake. Critically review recent research in seismic design.

Course content

Nature and origin of earthquake activity and its consequences on structures. Seismic design and assessment of structures. Concepts of ductility. Design of structures for earthquakes using both static and dynamic methods. Review of current research in seismic design. Theories of dynamic analysis and their application to a range of structures through the utilization of advanced analysis software.
