Course aim

To assist students in developing the knowledge and practice-based skills to design high-performance computer systems and implement them on Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA).

Course content

The evolution of computer technology and current trends; issues in computer design: design methodology and tools; performance and cost; instruction set architecture; Reduced Instruction Set Computer (RISC): MIPS instruction types, formats and architecture; RISC design and implementation; improving performance – pipelining; structural, data and control hazards; hazard reduction techniques – data dependencies and scheduling; memory hierarchy: measuring and improving cache memory performance; storage and input/output; parallel computer systems: multicores and multiprocessors.
