Course aim

To provide students with the opportunity to have some practical professional experience in urban and regional planning.

Course content

A work placement course whereby students are hosted in a professional planning workplace environment. Supported by a series of preparatory seminars addressing a range of topics including, but not limited to, professional conduct, integrity and ethical practice, employer and student responsibilities, occupational health and safety, personal workplace management issues; and stress management and productivity in the workplace. In the workplace students will learn through mentorship and direct experience a range of professional planning skills and strategies. These will vary according to the workplace within which the student will be placed, but may include development assessment, development plan preparation, policy advice, environmental impact assessment, community consultation, research into local planning matters, articulation of community interests and viewpoints on planning matters. Students will also experience more general professional development including time management, report writing, legislated obligations regarding office practices, dealing with colleagues, the public and other stakeholders.

Students will be required to keep a reflective journal detailing their experiences and reflecting upon these both personally and professionally. These individual reflections will be explored as a group during a debriefing seminar following the work placement.
