World Trade Law

Course aim

By the end of this course, students should be able to identify the major international trade institutions centering on the international law, procedures and policies of the World Trade Organization. The course explores major principles, concepts, and rules governing the regulation of international trade in goods and services and how national and international trade law is integrated. The course examines the ongoing development of international trade law through this institution and the dispute resolution mechanisms, the jurisprudence and social impact of the World Trade Organisation.

Course content

• Harmonisation of National Regulation (SPS, TBT, TRIPS)
• History and Structures of the World Trade Organization (WTO)
• WTO Trade Law Fundamentals: Tariffs, Quotas and Non-discrimination, Subsidies, Countervailing Duties and Dumping
• WTO Dispute Settlement
• Development in WTO: WTO and Human Rights; WTO and the Environment; WTO and Food Security.
• Harmonisation of National Regulation
