Arid Land Water Resources

Course aim

Students will develop advanced skills in literature and data research to develop a deep knowledge of water resources in Australian arid and semi arid landscapes, and also a broad understanding of the historical, social and economic factors that determine land use practices. Students will develop advanced skills in integrating and communicating this knowledge.

Course content

The course will cover: water resources of arid lands in Australia and elsewhere (climate, soils, biota, water use by plants & animals, hydrology of ecosystems); cultural history & land uses (rangelands, mining, Aboriginal land, wilderness, reserves, tourism); significance of water resources in management issues (mining rehabilitation, Great Artesian Basin); practical skills (experimental & survey techniques, data analysis & statistics, advanced report-writing).
