Research and Evidence in Pharmacy

Course aim

To introduce students to the principles of research methodology, to reinforce understanding of statistical analysis for solving problems related to pharmacy practice, and to consider the ways in which evidence is used to influence pharmacy practice.

Course content

Australian research in perspective, sources of funding, grantsmanship; the approach to research, quantitative and qualitative approaches, research questions, design of studies; searching the literature, assessment of the quality of research, critical appraisal; a review of relevant statistical methods, application to case studies, sample size and power, appropriate use of statistical software; human and animal studies, ethics in research; bibliographic software; translational research and using evidence to influence practice; presentation of outcomes – oral and written.
