Course aim

This course provides an opportunity for students to solve practical engineering design problems and to recognise the roles of systems thinking, innovation and creativity in the design process.

Course content

Lectures and tutorials will introduce you to the exciting and complex world of engineering design and innovation. Activities and projects will help you to explore engineering problem solving, basic systems engineering concepts, the engineering design process, identifying requirements, design concepts, creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship, developing solutions, test and evaluation processes, project management principles and basic tools. We use international examples of engineering failures to help you explore how projects fail and how mistakes can be avoided or minimised. We also use learning journals and tutorial activities to expand your professional writing and teamwork skills since effective communication is essential for professional engineers working in diverse domestic and global contexts.
