Course aim

To provide students with an understanding of the ecological principles and environmental management practices involved in greening cities by means of biodiversity conservation and restoration projects.

Course content

The concept of urban biodiversity and its complexity in cities that form an environmental continuum from the semi-natural to the mainly artificial, providing habitats for a wide variety of plant and non-human animal species. The importance of urban biodiversity to quality of human life in cities. The ecological structure, function and dynamics of urban wildlife habitats. Urban biodiversity conservation and restoration strategies and associated techniques of urban wildlife habitat inventory, classification and analysis. The integration of biodiversity conservation and restoration projects into wider environmental management frameworks by applying a landscape ecology perspective to the development of urban greening plans. The use of biodiversity conservation and restoration projects to meet both ecological and social sustainability goals.
