Greening Cities: Vegetation Management Issues

Course aim

To provide students with an understanding of the role of plants in the ecology of cities and the management of urban vegetation issues.

Course content

The management of plant species and vegetation in cities. The concept of pest plant species. Why some urban plant species and vegetation types require conservation efforts. Stake holders and interest groups in urban plant species and vegetation management. Community attitudes to urban plants and vegetation. Health, economic and other risks posed by urban plants and vegetation to the human population. Health, economic and other risks to the environment or to animal or other plant species. Management strategies for urban plant species and vegetation (including costs and ethical considerations). Benefits arising from plant and vegetation management/conservation. Legal and other responsibilities of people towards urban plants and vegetation. Political ramifications of urban plant and vegetation management strategies.
