Law and Globalisation

Course aim

The aim of this course is to give students an appreciation of the global context in which the Australian legal system operates and an understanding of how international and overseas legal systems impact upon Australia’s legal system.

Course content

• Ways of understanding and looking at the increasing globalization of law;
• Theoretical models that inform our understanding of globalization drawn from economics, sociology and law;
• Strengths and weaknesses of globalization in the face of changes in the power and authority of the State;
• Examination of various agents of globalization, such as global law firms, financial markets, multinational corporations; the rise of global networks; and
• Case studies of globalization looking at examples that may include corporate law, banking and finance, competition law and business regulation.
