Leisure and Tourism: Predicting Demand

Course aim

To enable students to understand the factors that influence demand in leisure and tourism contexts. To provide the context in which students can examine various approaches to predicting demand trends and tourist consumption behaviour.

Course content

The course will focus on outlining the basic principles and concepts behind leisure and tourism, including social trends and changes that have occurred and are continuing to occur in people’s behavioural patterns. The course will then focus on demand, outlining how demand can be applied to both leisure and tourism contexts. An understanding of consumer behaviour will then be entered into, specifically focusing on the ‘new’ consumer, the psychology of consumption and consumption patterns and the unique nature of experiential consumption. This course will also explore various aspects of demand trends for emerging tourism products and destinations. Finally, the course will provide a case study to allow a variety of predictive models to be conceptualised and then tested in terms of predicting demand.
