Tourism: Impacts and Sustainability

Course aim

To provide students with a framework for the study of the interaction between tourism and the physical, cultural, social, political and economic environments within which it operates.
To enable students to evaluate the costs and benefits of tourism for host communities in a variety of social and cultural settings.
To enable students to explore the ethical dimension of tourism planning and tourist activity.

Course content

Cultural preservation and cultural commodification; authenticity and pseudo-events; the demonstration effect; crime, prostitution and tourism; a sense of place and its loss; Doxey's Irridex; gender dimensions of tourism practice; tourism, diplomacy and international understanding; the politics of tourism planning; the multiplier effect and leakage; employment issues; environmentally responsible tourism; conflict, coexistence and symbiosis; carrying capacity; community involvement; sustainability; impact assessment.
