Course aim

To develop an understanding of key concepts in film theory, to develop knowledge of the codes and conventions of cinema, and to develop skills in film analysis using theoretical frameworks.

Course content

This course is an introduction to key concepts in film theory. Students will study a variety of films and theoretical frameworks, develop knowledge about film as an art form and as a popular medium, develop an understanding of the codes and conventions of cinema and how these may be employed to engage the audience and convey meaning, and develop skills of analysis.
