Course aim

To introduce students to the concepts and principles of spatial analysis based on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software and to provide students with an understanding of the applications of GIS to a range of disciplines including, regional and urban planning, transport planning, demography and environmental studies.

Course content

Concepts and principles of spatial analysis and mapping. Social and ethical issues in GIS applications, Data layers in GIS. Raster and vector data. Point, line and polygon representations. Location and coordinate systems. GIS linkages to other software packages including spreadsheet and database packages. Tabular data manipulation. Familiarisation with GIS software. Generation of GIS maps and outputs. Interpretation of GIS maps and tabular outputs using data from urban planning, transport planning, demography and environmental studies.
