Entry requirements
Entry to the Honours program will be available to students who have successfully completed a Bachelor degree in a relevant discipline. Applicants should have displayed a high level of academic achievement throughout their degree program, normally achieving a credit level average.

Applicants are selected on the basis of academic merit and the availability of a supervisor in the proposed area of research.

Relevant disciplines would typically include science, technology, engineering, or environmental studies. Applicants with qualifications in other disciplines are encouraged to apply and will be assessed on a case by case basis.

Aim

To provide students with the opportunity for advanced study and introductory research experience in a range of science disciplines. This includes Nano- and Biomaterials, Chemistry, Applied Physics, Materials Science, Agricultural and Food Science, Environmental Science, Earth Science, and Ecology. The program will prepare students for postgraduate research or for employment as professional scientists.

Content & Structure

The degree requires the completion of 36 units including:

1 x 4.5 unit research methods course
2 x 4.5 unit electives
1 x 4.5 field work course
2 x 4.5 and 1 x 9 unit honours thesis courses.

Potential applicants should contact the program director as early as possible, preferably in November of the preceding year, to investigate the suitability of their expected qualifications, and possible honours projects.

Notes

1. At the beginning of the academic year, students will be advised of available and recommended UniSA courses that will be included in elective courses, including relevant undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Alternatively, with the approval of the Program Director, students may select appropriate elective courses of equivalent value from other institutions.

2. Depending on the number of students enrolled, these courses may be offered in a class-based format or as directed study under the guidance of the course coordinator.

3. To allow for part-time study and with Program Director approval, the minor thesis and Scientific Practice and Advanced Topics in Science courses may be taken in alternate teaching periods or across both Study Period 2 and Study Period 5.
