Aim

The Bachelor of Design (Product Design) degree qualifies individuals to undertake professional work as industrial designers. The program provides individuals with the broad and coherent body of knowledge and skills relevant to the design, creation and use of the thousands of products and systems that people use every day. These include a wide range of consumer goods through to more sophisticated industrial products that represent the many facets of our industrialised and technological society.

Content & Structure

Graduates of a Bachelor of Design (Product Design) degree will have a broad and coherent body of knowledge of the aesthetics, function, usability and cultural significance of physical and virtual products in order to play a key role in determining how new artefacts, services and systems are developed, the materials and technologies used and environmental sustainability. Graduates will possess a solid understanding of the practical issues that influence product design– such as ergonomics, user experience, production technologies, trend forecasting, sustainability – and how this knowledge informs the design of products that make people's lives safer, happier and more environmentally sustainable.

The students will complete 108 units of study comprising 9 units of design, culture and society, 54 units of studio and practice, 36 units of major in product design, and 9 units of electives.

From 4 August 2025, the University of South Australia will no longer be accepting applications for new students. Study at Adelaide University.
