Aim

The Bachelor of Design (Illustration and Animation) combines the Diploma Program in Game and VFX TAFE SA and aims to develop graduates with a broad and coherent body of knowledge which includes industry relevant technical skills, theoretical knowledge, creative and professional processes and experience applicable to a range of careers specific to illustration, animation and game art.

Content & Structure

Students enrolled in this program will graduate with a Bachelor of Design (Illustration and Animation) from UniSA and a Diploma Program in Game and VFX from TAFE SA upon successful completion of both awards. Graduates will have a unique visual language that is critically informed through creative/conceptual development processes, core drawing and picture production and animation software skills and a personal portfolio specific to the area(s) of illustration, animation and game development practice they are interested in. This will be achieved through experiential studio workshops, professional production for industry, research investigation, and work integrated learning opportunities, such as work experience or mentorship with media industries, within the program.

The Bachelor of Design (Illustration and Animation) is a three-year program combining the Diploma Program in Game and VFX with courses undertaken at both UniSA and TAFE SA campuses. Students will complete 108 units of study.

Semester 1 of first year is undertaken at UniSA, and introduces the technical skills and theoretical knowledge required for pictorial development and visual storytelling within international professional illustration and animation fields. This includes the use of Illustrative media (drawing, painting, sculpture, 2D and 3D digital software to make static and moving pictures, social, cultural and historical awareness of the field, animation techniques, design processes for problem solving and solution generation, visual storytelling, conceptual thinking, critical analysis and visual literacy.

In Semester 1 of second year, students will commence study at the TAFE SA Adelaide campus to begin the Diploma Program in Game and VFX courses. Students will undertake the Diploma Program in Game and VFX courses throughout Semester 1 and Semester 2 of their second year. During this time students will develop and apply the technical software, design and production skills related to game art.

Returning to UniSA in Semester 1 of their third and final year of study, students will develop a unique visual language applied to increasingly complex illustration, animation and game development projects and contexts, incorporating advanced drawing, animation and visual effects skills, culminating in a personal portfolio or show reel specific to the area(s) of professional practice they choose.

Student learning is facilitated through experiential studio and online workshops, professional production, industry networking and mentorship within the program, for example collaboration with student teams from TAFE SA and UniSA STEM to produce games for Adelaide’s Anime and Video Games Festival (AVCON). Students will develop an understanding of creative practice research methodologies and methods including project management skills which enable further learning in course-work postgraduate studies strategically linked to various industries.
