Admission criteria

The admission criteria have been grouped to assist you to easily find the information most relevant to your circumstances. However, you may fit into more than one and the university will consider applicants against each of the relevant criteria.

To be eligible for selection, applicants are required to:

Qualify for the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE), and
obtain a competitive ATAR, and
meet any prerequisite requirements with a minimum grade of C-

Alternatively, applicants can fulfil one of the following requirements with a competitive result, and demonstrate that they fulfil any prerequisite requirements, and other academic requirements for the program:

Complete secondary education qualifications equivalent to SACE, or
Complete the International Baccalaureate Diploma with a minimum score of 24 points, or
Complete or partly complete a recognised higher education program at a recognised higher education institution, or
Complete at least four Open Universities Australia (OUA) courses at undergraduate level or above, or
Qualify for Special Entry, or
Complete an award from a registered training organisation at Diploma level or above, or
Complete a University Foundation Studies program

International students who speak English as a foreign language must have obtained one of the following standards within the last two years prior to admission. Possession of one or more of these qualifications, in addition to the academic entry requirements, does not, in itself, guarantee a place at the University of South Australia. Applications are considered on an individual basis and selection is competitive. Where previous study/work experience was conducted in English, the application must be accompanied by certified documentation from the educational institution/employer certifying that the language of instruction was English.

Aim

The Laws Double Degree (Honours) will provide a professional level of education for students seeking to pursue a legal career. Study in a complementary discipline will provide students with the background to enable them to operate in a wide range of working environments, depending on the second discipline.

Content & Structure

The total number of units required is 180 - that is, 40 courses. Those 40 courses are divided as follows between the two degree programs: 24 courses from the Bachelor of Laws program; and 16 courses from the Second Degree.

Rules

1. The Laws Double Degree (Honours) comprises 40 courses totaling 180 units and includes: 24 courses from the Bachelor of Laws program; and 16 courses from the Bachelor of Psychological Science Degree.

2. Electives 1-4 may be selected from any courses offered in the University subject to any prerequisite requirements. See undergraduate elective courses - http:// programs.unisa.edu.au/public/pcms/Home/Undergraduateelectives.aspx. Students may use their Electives to build a Minor in another discipline. See Majors/ Submajors/Minors at http://programs.unisa.edu.au/public/pcms/Home/ Majorssubmajorsminorsindex.aspx. Students may use Electives 3 and 4 to take additional Specialist Psychology Courses subject to prerequisite requirements.

3. In addition to completion of the core courses, students must complete one (nine units) of the level 8 capstone courses.

4. One law elective in the final year needs to be an advanced elective.

Notes

1. Students must complete the requirements of each degree as specified in the relevant program schedule to receive both degree parchments.

2. Students planning to undertake Honours in Psychology, either at UniSA or at another Australian university must successfully complete the Specialist Psychology Courses BEHL 3005 Advanced Research Methods and BEHL 4003 Psychological Assessment.

3. This course contributes towards the law honours grade for the program.

Professional accreditation and recognition

This program covers in a comprehensive way the academic requirements for admission to practice as specified by the national Law Admissions Consultative Committee and applied in South Australia by the Legal Practitioners Education and Admission Council. In addition to the academic requirements of the program, students seeking admission to practice are required to complete an approved practical legal training (PLT) program. Students seeking admission to practice in other Australian jurisdictions should apply to the appropriate admitting authority.

This program is accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council.
