Admission criteria

The admission criteria have been grouped to assist you to easily find the information most relevant to your circumstances. However, you may fit into more than one and the university will consider applicants against each of the relevant criteria.

Certain conditions apply. For more information refer to Appendix 4 of the University's Selection and Entry policy.

To be eligible for selection, applicants are required to have:

Completed the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE); and

completed 200 credits of subjects;
achieved a grade of C* or better in the Personal Learning Plan, 20 credits of literacy, 10 credits of numeracy and the Research Project at Stage 2;
achieved a grade C- or better in an additional 60 credits at Stage 2;
obtained a competitive ATAR.

* For Stage 2 subjects a grade of C- or better is required

Alternatively, applicants are required to have one of the following:

Completed the International Baccalaureate Diploma;
Completed or partly completed a recognised higher education program at a recognised higher education institution;
Completed a recognised diploma or associated diploma from TAFE or Certificate IV level course;
Completed at least four Open Universities Australia (OUA) courses at the appropriate level;
Qualified for Special Entry; or
Completed University Foundation program;

Completed one of the following professional courses:

Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE)
MCSE + Internet and Microsoft Certified Solution Developer (MCSD)
Lotus Certified Professional (CLP)
Novell Certified NetWare Engineer (CNE)
Cisco Certified Networking Associate (CCNA)
Cisco Certified Networking Professional (CCNP)

In addition, international students who speak English as a foreign language must have obtained one of the following standards within the last two years prior to admission. Possession of one or more of these qualifications, in addition to the academic entry requirements, does not, in itself, guarantee a place at the University of South Australia. Applications are considered on an individual basis and selection is competitive. Where previous study/work experience was conducted in English, the application must be accompanied by certified documentation from the educational institution/employer certifying that the language of instruction/employment was English.

Aim

This program aims to provide both a fundamental understanding of computing and a specialist knowledge of the theory and practice of software engineering. The program prepares graduates for professional careers in computing and the information services industry in general and specialist software development organisations in particular.

Content & Structure

This four-year program is designed to educate students as computer professionals specialising in software engineering, that is, the skills required for the development of large-scale and complex software systems. The program consists of eight core information and communication technology courses (36 units), nine core software engineering courses (40.5 units), four elective courses in the third year (18 units), and for honours students, either three elective courses (13.5 units) or four advanced elective courses (18 units) in the fourth year, a final year industry-based project or thesis and for honours students, a research methods course.

The first year of this program is identical to the first year of the Bachelor of Information Technology, and students may transfer between these two programs with the approval of the Program Director.

Notes

1. The Elective course may be selected from any School within the University

2. Students successfully completing this program may be awarded a degree with honours for meritorious performance in the program. These students will normally have a grade point average of 5 or above (credit level average), will be identified no later than the end of the third year of the program, and be invited to enrol in the honours plan prior to the start of the final year of the program. These students will enrol in the INFT 4022 ICT Specialist Major Project 1 (Honours), INFT 4023 ICT Specialist Major Project 2 (Honours), and must select the Software Engineering Honours Minor.

3. Students not enrolled in the honours plan must enrol in INFT 4021 ICT Specialist Major Project 1, INFT 4022 ICT Specialist Major Project 2, and must select the Software Engineering non-honours Minor.

4. Students taking the honours minor may, with permission from the Program Director, take one course from the non-honours minor list. Students taking the non-honours minor may, with the permission of the Program Director, substitute up to two courses from the Honours minor list of courses.

5. Not all minor courses will be available every year. A list of available minor courses will be available each year from the School web site.

6. Students may, with the permission of the Program Director, take as a minor course a course not listed in the schedule above.

7. Program and Course Availability. The program is located at the Mawson Lakes campus. However, some courses will also be available at the Magill campus or the City West campus of the University. Some courses, particularly earlier year courses, are offered in both Study Period 2 and Study Period 5 and/or in distance mode and/or at intensive summer schools.
