Applicants would normally hold a degree in engineering or science, or an equivalent qualification. Applicants with relevant work experience who either hold a degree in a discipline such as management or information technology, or hold a lower qualification, will be assessed on a case by case basis.

Aim

This program provides graduates in mechanical oriented engineering disciplines with an advanced understanding of the current practice and technology in one of the following specialisations:

Advanced Manufacturing Technology
Engineering and Technology Management
Energy and Sustainable Systems
Materials and Nanotechnology

Content & Structure

The Master of Engineering program requires the completion of courses comprising 54 units. The units of study may consist of either:

10 x 4.5 unit courses and MFET 5045 Cases in Engineering Applications (9 units) OR
8 x 4.5 unit courses and MFET 5034 Minor Thesis 1(Eng) (9 units) and MFET 5035 Minor Thesis 2 (Eng) (9 units) OR
10 x 4.5 unit courses and MFET 5034 Minor Thesis 1(Eng) (9 units) OR
Applicants are referred to the Program Director to choose a particular program of study appropriate to their academic background and professional interests.

Rules & notes

Rules

1. Students must complete 54 units of study. This can consist of either: a) 8 x 4.5 unit courses and MFET 5034 Minor Thesis 1 (Eng) and MFET 5035 Minor Thesis 2 (Eng) OR b) 10 x 4.5 unit courses and MFET 5045 Cases in Engineering Applications OR c) 10 x 4.5 unit courses and MFET 5034 Minor Thesis 1 (Eng)

2. Students must complete at least three foundation courses, one of which must be ENGG 5006 Engineering Research Methods (compulsory).

3. Students must complete at least four x 4.5 unit specialist courses relevant to the specialisation they are undertaking (excluding the courses noted in rule 4).

4. Students must complete either: a) MFET 5045 Cases in Engineering Applications (9 units) OR b) MFET 5034 Minor Thesis 1 (Eng) (9 units) OR c) MFET 5034 Minor Thesis 1 (Eng) (9units) and MFET 5035 Minor Thesis 2 (Eng) (9 units)

5. Students may select other postgraduate courses run by the School of Advanced Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering to obtain the required units of study. Courses outside the relevant program schedule can only be selected with approval from the Program Director.

6. Credit will not normally be granted for more than one third of the total units of the program.

Notes

1. Students undertaking MFET 5045 Cases in Engineering Applications, MFET 5034 Minor Thesis 1 (Eng), and/or MFET 5035 Minor Thesis 2 (Eng), will normally enrol in these courses in their second year of study. Research topics will normally be indentified earlier.

2. Students who have successfully completed the relevant minimum number of units can exit from the Master program with a Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma in Engineering (specialisation).

3. Not all courses are available in any one year.

4. The Graduate Diploma in Professional Practice (Advanced Manufacturing Technology) provides a pathway for subsequent entry to this program and both awards can be completed in two years of full time study or part time equivalent.
