Aim

The Bachelor of Visual Effects aims to prepare students for employment in the global screen and media industry, and will develop students’ individual technical skills, theoretical knowledge, and professional expertise for a diverse range of careers as visual effects artists.

Content & Structure

The Bachelor of Visual Effects is a co-delivered, industry-focussed, specialist degree, and will be delivered in internal and mixed mode. Domestic and international students will be able to complete the program in a standard full time three-year period. The program will combine 12 week and intensive industry-based offerings, and will utilise study periods 2, 4, 5, and 6 to also provide the option of an accelerated 2.5 calendar year program schedule for domestic and international students.

The first 1.5 years of the program will include 10 courses delivered on site at UniSA, across Magill and City West campuses, and two courses delivered at RSP, and will provide students with the required curriculum to establish a strong knowledge base in visual effects production and theory. This will be achieved through the provision of experiential studios, tutorials, practicals, and workshops; the application of professional production practices; practice-based research investigation; and industry-based learning.

The final 1.5 years (equivalent) provides students with the nationally unparalleled opportunity to study in industry, at a world class visual effects company, and will be comprised of three 18-unit courses that are undertaken in intensive 12-week periods. During these courses, students will be immersed in a simulated studio environment at RSP’s Adelaide headquarters. Students will be introduced to the various roles and responsibilities of visual effects artists in a creative production schedule. They will develop industry-standard skills within a range of key visual effects disciplines, including look development, 3D modelling, compositing, tracking, dynamic effects, lighting, 3D animation, and creature effects, and they will produce high-quality, industry standard production work for inclusion in their professional showreel, to aid the transition into a visual effects career after graduation.

From 4 August 2025, the University of South Australia will no longer be accepting applications for new students. Study at Adelaide University.
