Admission criteria

The admission criteria have been grouped to assist you to easily find the information most relevant to your circumstances. However, you may fit into more than one and the university will consider applicants against each of the relevant criteria.

Certain conditions apply. For more information refer to Appendix 4 of the University's Selection and Entry policy.

Applicants are required to meet one of the following criteria with a competitive result, and demonstrate that they fulfil any prerequisite requirements and essential requirements for admission:

Recent secondary education
Meet any prerequisite requirements with a minimum grade of C- or equivalent
AND
- Qualify for the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE), and achieved a competitive Selection Rank (ATAR), or
- Complete secondary qualifications equivalent to SACE, or
- Complete the International Baccalaureate Diploma with a minimum score of 24 points
Applicants who have not achieved the Selection Rank required for automatic selection may be selected for any remaining places based on the grades of their year 12 subjects.

OR
Higher education study
- Complete or partly complete a recognised higher education program at a recognised higher education institution, or
- Complete at least four Open Universities Australia (OUA) courses at undergraduate level or above
OR
Vocational Education and Training (VET)
- Complete an award from a registered training organisation at Certificate IV or above
OR
Work and life experience
- Qualify for Special Entry, or
- Complete a UniSA Foundation Studies program or equivalent, or
- Hold completed secondary qualifications equivalent to SACE obtained more than 2 years in the past

Aim

The aim of this program is to provide a broad science education through a combination of majors from the science disciplines of Applied Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Ecosystem Sciences, Mathematics, Geographical Information Science and Geoscience, Biogeochemistry and Computer Science. The program aims to produce graduates who have an understanding of the fundamental concepts of the sciences they have elected to study, while the emphasis on laboratory and fieldwork is designed to give graduates the necessary skills to apply their knowledge in some field of human endeavour. The program also provides an appropriate science preparation for intending secondary science teachers.

Content & Structure

To qualify for the award a student must complete 108 units comprising fundamental studies in communication and statistics (9 units), two science majors (72 units), and six electives (27 units). At least two of these electives (9 units), must be science electives and four of the electives may be at an introductory level.

Rules

1. Majors: (a) Students must select two science majors (36 units each), and these each will include at least three advanced (level three), courses; (b) Students who are interested in taking a major in another area of science not listed in the program schedule must seek Program Director approval.

2. Electives: (a) At least two of these electives (9 units), must be science electives and only four of the electives may be at an introductory level; (b) Where there is ambiguity about the level or nature of electives, advice should be sought from the Program Director; (c) One elective must be a University-wide elective from any discipline.

Notes

1. Major in Applied Physics - SACE Stage 2 Physics and Mathematical Methods is assumed knowledge. The Major should be supported by two or more mathematics courses.

2. Major in Biology for Science - SACE Stage 2 Chemistry is assumed knowledge. Students who intend to take this Major should enrol in Quantitative Methods in Health (MATH 1065) instead of Statistics for Laboratory Sciences (MATH 1040).

3. Major in Chemistry for Science - SACE Stage 2 Chemistry is assumed knowledge. Students who intend to take this Major should enrol in Quantitative Methods in Health (MATH 1065) instead of Statistics for Laboratory Sciences (MATH 1040).

4. Major in Mathematics - SACE Stage 2 Mathematical Methods is assumed knowledge. Students should enrol in Statistical Methods (MATH 1068), instead of Statistics for Laboratory Sciences (MATH 1040), and Mathematical Communication (MATH 2024) instead of Professional and Technical Communication (COMM 1065).

5. Further studies - Students who intend to apply for subsequent entry into either a UniSA STEM or UniSA Clinical and Health Sciences honours program should seek Program Director advice in order to complete extra courses in the area of the relevant major.
