Admission criteria

The admission criteria have been grouped to assist you to easily find the information most relevant to your circumstances. However, you may fit into more than one and the university will consider applicants against each of the relevant criteria.

Certain conditions apply. For more information refer to Appendix 4 of the University's Selection and Entry policy.

To be eligible for selection, applicants are required to have:

Completed the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE); and
- completed 200 credits of subjects;
- achieved a grade of C* or better in the Personal Learning Plan, 20 credits of literacy, 10 credits of numeracy and the Research Project at Stage 2;
- achieved a grade C- or better in an additional 60 credits at Stage 2;
- obtained a competitive ATAR.
* For Stage 2 subjects a grade of C- or better is required

PRE-REQUISITES:

SACE Stage 2 Math Studies Or SACE Stage 2 Math Methods

Alternatively, the minimum educational requirements may be met by those who have fulfilled the prerequisite requirements in addition to one of the following:
- Completed the International Baccalaureate Diploma;
- Completed or partly completed a recognised higher education program at a recognised higher education institution;
- Completed a recognised diploma or associated diploma from TAFE or Certificate IV level course;
- Completed at least four Open Universities Australia (OUA) courses at the appropriate level;
- Qualified for Special Entry; or
- Completed University Foundation program
OR

have fulfilled the prerequisite requirements and completed one of the following professional courses:
- Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE)
- MCSE + Internet and Microsoft Certified Solution Developer (MCSD)
- Lotus Certified Professional (CLP)
- Novell Certified NetWare Engineer (CNE)
- Cisco Certified Networking Associate (CCNA)
- Cisco Certified Networking Professional (CCNP)

Aim

This program provides a flagship program for high achieving students in the discipline of computer and information science. This program aims to provide a broad and fundamental understanding of the theory and practice of computers and information technology and prepares graduates for a professional career in computing and research in the advanced computing industry. In addition, it aims to provide advanced program work and project work for students in computer and information science. The program will prepare students for postgraduate studies or industrial employment in leading edge computing and information technology.

Content & Structure

This four year program consists of:

core courses in computer and information science (72 units)
5 core courses (22.5 units) in advanced computer and information science topics
3 elective courses (13.5 units) selected from a range of speciality areas
2 courses (9 units) of research laboratory placement within the school
an Elective course (4.5 units)
a research methods course (4.5 units) and
an 18 unit minor thesis undertaken in the final year of study.
A total of 144 units are required for the completion of the program.

Notes

1. Students in other undergraduate degrees taught by the School of Computer and Information Science may be permitted to join this program at the end of first year or second year if their grade point average is 6 or above. Students in the program must maintain a grade point average of 6 or above to remain in the program. Students in the program not achieving this in any year will revert to the Bachelor of Software Engineering degree or the Bachelor of Information Technology degree.

2. The Elective course may be selected from any School within the University.

3. A student must select 3 electives (13.5 units) as shown in the schedule. At least two of these electives must be selected from the Group B list of electives.
