Aim

To prepare intending middle/secondary school teachers as specialists in Aboriginal Studies and a second teaching area who are skilled, committed and flexible professionals with the capacities to promote effective and inclusive learning in a variety of education settings and a range of community contexts.

Content & Structure

The program is equivalent to four years of full-time study, that is 144 units.
The program includes courses in:

  • Australian Studies (8 x 4.5 unit courses = 36 units);
  • a further sub-major or minors of the student's choice which will provide at least a second teaching area in schools (6 x 4.5 unit courses = 27 units);
  • Education Studies which include theoretical courses regarding learning, curriculum and the social contexts of education, reflective practice placements in schools and courses related to the curriculum and methodology of teaching the two selected Learning Areas (13 x 4.5 unit courses plus 1 x 9 unit course = 67.5 units);
  • 2 x 4.5 unit electives (1 x 4.5 unit Aboriginal Studies elective plus 1 x 4.5 unit International Relations elective (= 9 units);
  • 1 x 4.5 unit Free Elective course selected from undergraduate courses across UniSA (= 4.5 units).

The emphasis in the first two years is on Australian Studies with the Education Studies being emphasised in the second half of the program.
