Admission criteria

The admission criteria have been grouped to assist you to easily find the information most relevant to your circumstances. However, you may fit into more than one and the university will consider applicants against each of the relevant criteria.

Certain conditions apply. For more information refer to Appendix 4 of the University's Selection and Entry policy.

To be eligible for selection, applicants are required to have:

Completed the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE); and
- completed 200 credits of subjects;
- achieved a grade of C* or better in the Personal Learning Plan, 20 credits of literacy, 10 credits of numeracy and the Research Project at Stage 2;
- achieved a grade C- or better in an additional 60 credits at Stage 2;
- obtained a competitive ATAR.
* For Stage 2 subjects a grade of C- or better is required
OR:
- completed the equivalent secondary education qualifications as required for University entry under SACE and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
- completed the International Baccalaureate Diploma, obtaining a minimum score of 24 points and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
- completed or partly completed a recognised higher education program at a recognised higher education institution and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
- completed at least four Open Universities Australia (OUA) courses at the appropriate level and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
- completed an award from TAFE or from another registered training organisation at AQF Certificate IV level or above and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
- qualified for Special Entry and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
- completed the University Foundation Studies program.

Where previous study/work experience was conducted in English, the application must be accompanied by certified documentation form the educational institution/employer certifying that the language of instruction/employment was English.

Aim

To graduate students into the profession of Industrial Design who are capable of designing and implementing socially and environmentally responsive environments, objects, products and systems.

Content & Structure

The program is a four year full-time or part-time equivalent program. Year 1 introduces students to basic skills and concepts and establishes a theoretical framework. Year 2 and Year 3 develop competence in core areas. Year 4 expands the intellectual and professional areas of the program and provides scope for specialisation through electives.

The program requires completion of courses comprising 144 units.

Rules & notes

Rules

1. Students progress through the program by years. They must complete one year before undertaking courses from the next year. With the permission of the Program Director, student may carry one course failure, other than an Industrial Design Studio, forward to the next year.

2. All prerequisites must be fulfilled for courses undertaken. Exemptions to this rule may be with the permission of the Program Director.

3. Students must normally complete the degree within 4 years of full-time study (or the equivalent of part-time study) from the date of their initial enrolment, not including any periods of approved leave of absence or enforced suspension.

4. Students invited to undertake the Honours program will be required to undertake the courses ARCH 4013 LLS Honours Research 1 and ARCH 4014 LLS Honours Research 2 in lieu of the two Art, Architecture and Design Electives.

Notes

1. Students are required to complete two Art, Architecture and Design Elective courses (unless enrolled in Honours). These are designed to extend and expand students' intellectual and professional abilities in core and cognate areas of the curriculum and to provide scope for individual development in particular areas of professional and academic interest. A selection of electives will be offered each year, depending on staff availability and student demand. Students who have a Grade Point Average of 4.5 or more and wish to independently pursue a topic of interest not available in the electives offered in any one study period may choose either a research- or project-based individual elective with the approval of the Program Director. 2. Students must consult with the Program Director by the end of Week 13 in the first half of their 3rd Year if they wish to undertake a minor stream. Students wishing to undertake a minor stream in Sustainable Industrial Design Strategies, Form for Industry or Furnishing Design for Manufacture must complete 18 units of minor stream courses. These courses must include RENG 1004 Industrial Design Technology A plus the relevant electives listed below: (a) Sustainable Industrial Design Strategies: ARCH 2037 Sustainable Design Strategies; ARCH 2038 Sustainable Futures; ARCH 3036 LLS Extra Projects (Advanced) or ARCH 4014 LLS Honours Research 2 (project focus specific to stream) (b) Form for Industry: ARCH 2028 Morphology and Logic of Form and Function; ARCH 2054 Aesthetics of Three Dimensional Form; ARCH 3036 LLS Extra Projects (Advanced) or ARCH 4014 LLS Honours Research 2 (project focus specific to stream) (c) Furnishing Design for Manufacture: ARCH 2035 Furniture Design for Manufacture; ARCH 2034 Ergonomic and Cultural Factors in Furniture Design; ARCH 3036 LLS Extra Projects (Advanced) or ARCH 4014 LLS Honours Research 2 (project focus specific to stream)

3. All students must complete one freely chosen Elective as part of their undergraduate program. The Free Elective may be chosen from either within the School, or from other areas of the University. See undergraduate elective courses.
