Aim

The Master of Design (Industrial Design) qualifies individuals who apply an advanced body of knowledge in creative and technological aptitude in industrial design, and have the specialist theoretical framework to manage complexity and evaluate processes in industrial design projects, professional practice or scholarship, and as a pathway for further learning.

Content & Structure

Graduates of the Master of Design (Industrial Design) will have a body of knowledge to lead in the innovative humanisation of technology including the development of physical products, systems, interfaces and environments for cultural and economic exchange in industrial design. Graduates will also have deeper knowledge of existing and emerging materials and processing technologies for high and low volume manufacturing and the ability to integrate this knowledge in complex industrial design problems, and high level specialised technical skills for digital prototyping for the simulation, development and communication of three-dimensional design. Graduates will also have knowledge of research principles and analytical methods to develop and implement, and critically evaluate unique and commercial solutions in industrial design.

Graduates will demonstrate the application of knowledge and skills through critical review, analysis, and high level research in human factors, technology, market and consumer preferences and cultural factors for the development and refinement of product design for different users, contexts and cultural situations through a substantial research-based project.

The students will complete 72 units of study comprising 36 units of design research studio, 4.5 units of internship, 13.5 units of research methods and project, and 18 units of electives.
