In order to complete a Bachelor of Journalism, Bachelor of International Relations comprising 144 units, students must complete: 9 units of Common Core courses (2 courses), a 54 unit professional major in Journalism (11 courses), a 36 unit professional major in International Relations (8 courses), 18 units of foreign language studies (4 courses), 18 units of World Politics electives (4 courses or an international exchange half year), a 4.5 unit Free Elective and a 4.5 unit Indigenous Studies course. Students may vary to the extent of completing 9 units of foreign language studies (2 courses) and 27 units of International Studies electives (6 courses) or 27 units of foreign language studies (6 courses) and 9 units of World Politics electives (2 courses).
2. The journalism professional major is a sequence of related courses which comprises 54 units (or 11 courses including 2 selected from the Journalism major options). Students are required to complete Level 1 major courses before progressing to Level 2, and to complete Level 2 courses before progressing to Level 3, except with approval from Program Director. Students are advised to check course prerequisites and co-requisites prior to enrolment in courses.
3. The Language courses are surrogates for a sequence of courses in a language which is chosen by students from one of the languages taught by academic staff of the University of South Australia (French, Italian or Japanese - refer to individual entries in Majors and Minors) or from those available by cross-institutional cooperation (including Mandarin Chinese, German, Modern Greek, Indonesian, or Spanish under arrangements approved by the Languages Coordinator). Overseas students from non-English speaking backgrounds may take 18 units of coursework in English as an Additional Language in place of 18 units in a language other than English.
4. The four World Politics electives are chosen from the World Politics Major listed in Majors and Minors. World Politics electives may be consolidated as an International Study Experience half year at a foreign university with which the University of South Australia has an international exchange agreement. If a student's international exchange program includes one or more Journalism courses or a Journalism work placement, the student shall complete an equivalent unit value of International Studies courses at the University of South Australia to maintain the overall balance in the double degree program. A Hawke Ambassador International Volunteer Experience (POLI 3014) is an alternative half year international experience. World Politics courses required in the International Relations Professional Major strand chosen by a student then become International Relations Professional Major courses for that student, and cannot be double-counted as World Politics options by that student. Students are free to choose as World Politics courses any other courses selected from the Major in World Politics.
5. All students complete at least one 4.5 unit Free Elective as part of their undergraduate program of study. The elective may be chosen from any program offered by the University of South Australia, including Journalism. See undergraduate elective courses.
