Bachelor of Laboratory Medicine

Rules

1. All students in the Division of Health Sciences who, as part of their program, undertake activities where interaction with patients / the public is required, such as in field or clinical placements / visits and in University clinics and gyms, must demonstrate that they have a Department for Communities and Social Inclusion National Criminal History Record Check, which will be current for the duration of that activity. Interstate student placements require a National Police Certificate.

2. Credit for previous studies or exemption from work within courses may be granted in accordance with University policy. The maximum credit allowed is normally up to three-quarters of the total units of the program.

3. An appropriate immunisation profile is required prior to clinical placement.

4. Students are required to satisfy the standard of dress and behaviour prescribed by institutions in which clinical placements are undertaken. Failure to satisfy such obligations may prevent them from fulfilling the requirements for completion of the program.

5. Students may only enrol in the following SP5 courses if they have previously completed (and attempted all assessment components) in the corresponding SP2 course(s), viz: Chemistry 101 - Chemistry 100; Molecules to Tissues B - Molecules to Tissues A; Immunology - Physiology; Molecular Genetics - Biochemistry; Pathophysiology - Physiology AND Histology; Haematology - Biochemistry AND Physiology.

Notes

1. Clinical Practice A/B and Advanced Practice A/B can only be undertaken full time.

2. Students are required to undertake Clinical Practice A/B and Advanced Practice A/B courses in an approved pathology laboratory. Placement outside South Australia may be allowed.

3. Students who are employed in an appropriate laboratory setting may be granted full credit in Clinical Practice A/B and Advanced Practice A/B.

4. Admission into the Honours stream is offered in accordance with University Policy. A quota for places into the Honours stream may be applied.

5. Students accepted into the Honours stream enrol in the courses Honours Research Practice A/B in place of Advanced Practice A/B.

6. Honours Research Practice A/B can only be undertaken full time. Students may be required to enrol in these courses in SP1.

7. Enrolment into Honours Research Practice C cannot be deferred.

8. Students granted full credit in Clinical Practice A/B and Advanced Practice A/B and who successfully complete courses in Study Period 2, third year are permitted to enrol in the corresponding fourth year, Study Period 5 courses (i.e. they are exempt from the requirements to complete all third year Study Period 2 courses before enrolling in any fourth year Study Period 5 courses), viz: Infectious Diseases - Clinical Microbiology; Molecular Pathology - Clinical Biochemistry; Histotechnology - Histopathology and Cytopathology; Transfusion and Haemostasis - Advanced Haematology.
