Rules
1. Students may transfer from a double degree which includes the Bachelor of International Relations to the Bachelor of International Relations degree.
2. Credit may be granted for relevant studies completed at a recognised tertiary educational institution, including cross-institutional language studies, a program of approved overseas study or approved TAFE qualifications. The maximum credit granted is 72 units.
3. Credit may be granted for graduates of a recognised degree in any field who gain entry into Bachelor of International Relations program.Graduates may be given full credit for International Relations courses completed as part of their previous degree. The maximum credit granted is 72 units.
Notes
1. Professional Major: Students must complete an International Relations Professional Major comprising 5 core courses and one of four optional strands of three courses(36 units) - refer Note 2. The core courses are:
POLI 1015 Peace, War and International Politics;
POLI 1010 International Relations and World Politics;
POLI 2011 Contending Theoretical Perspectives in International Politics;
POLI 2026 International Political Economy;
POLI 3016 Capstone Research Project.
2. Major Optional Strand: Students select one of the four optional strands shown on the program schedule and complete all three required courses for the International Relations Professional Major. The optional strands are: Asia and the World; Forces in World Politics; Peace and Security; Politics, Policy and Risk.
3. Students complete a World Politics minor of four courses (18 units). Courses are chosen from the World Politics Major, Sub-major, Minor; other courses may be substituted with the approval of the Program Director.
4. Professional Experience: Students have three choices within either a 9 or 18 unit professional experience component. This component may be fulfilled by completing one of the following:
POLI 3014 Hawke Ambassador International Volunteer Experience (18 units );
International Study Experience (18 units);
POLI 3013 Australian Professional Experience internship of structured work experience (9 units).
5. Professional Specialisation (18 or 27 units): Students select courses for the Professional Specialisation component from 3 categories: World Politics, Languages (refer Note 6) or Application courses (refer Note 7). Not more than 18 units of approved Application courses or one or more approved sequences of language courses, or not more than 18 more units of World Politics courses - refer Note 6.
6. Students complete a Professional Specialisation of 4 courses (18 units) for students undertaking International Volunteer Experience or International Study Experience, or 6 courses (27 units) for students undertaking Australian Professional Experience.
Students may select courses in World Politics, Languages or Application options. None of the options is compulsory. Students may choose to do:
a) no more than two additional courses (9 units in World Politics, for a maximum of six courses in World Politics, not including the three required courses in the optional strand selected by the student for the International Relations Professional Major;
b) no more than four language courses (18 units) (optional for MBIL students). French, Italian and Japanese are available at UniSA, Chinese and German at the University of Adelaide and Modern Greek, Indonesian and Spanish at Flinders University - by cross-institutional enrolment. Other languages are available by cross-institutional enrolment with approval of Program Director. NESB students may choose up to 18 units of courses in English as an Additional Language. Students may combine 18 units of language choices in a professional specialisation with their Free Elective in a language and an additional course in a LOTE as part of an International Study Experience for the maximum of 9 courses of language studies (40.5 units). Students may combine their language courses with appropriately focused World Politics courses.
7. Professional Specialisation - Application courses (18 units) selected from one of the minor sequences listed in the Program Handbook. Other application courses or minor sequences may be chosen tihe the approval of the Program Director.
8. Free Elective (4.5 units). All students complete at least one freely chosen Free Elective as part of their undergraduate program. See undergraduate elective courses.
9. The MBIL Program Schedule provides for World Politics minor or professional specialisation course program options in the first four semesters which MBIL students who choose a language can use for sequential enrolment in a language for four semesters, and complete their World Politics minor in other World Politics minor or professional specialisation course settings indicated. Other students should try to complete their World Politics minor in the first four semesters. Students who prefer to undertake a Professional Experience component in the second half of second year will, and others may, need to seek enrolment advice to prepare a modified program study plan.
10. A Common Core course is one available to students enrolled in most undergraduate programs offered within the School of Communication, International Studies and Languages.
11. Required Indigenous Studies course.
